Abed-nego

Abed-Nego [Heb./Aram. of the Akkadian 'abednego, "Servant of Nebo"]. A Babylonian personal name honoring the god Nebo.

The name Nebuchadnezzar's chief of eunuchs assigned one of Daniel's three companions, Azariah [Heb. 'azaryahu, "Yahweh is strength"] (Dan 1:7). This crude attempt at enculturating them in Babylonian religion was a matter of indifference for Abed-Nego. With his companions, he refused to compromise on the matter of the king's food and drink and on the king's command to worship the golden image (Dan 1:3).
