Michal

Michal [Heb. mikal]. The youngest of Saul's two daughters with Ahinoam (1 Sam 14:49-50) given to David to be his wife in fulfillment of the promise of Saul to give his daughter in marriage to the one who could kill Goliath (1 Sam 17:25; 18:20-28). Early in her marriage, Michal loved David and helped him escape Saul's murder plot (1 Sam 19:9-17). During David's prolonged absence, she was given in marriage to Palti by her father (1 Sam 25:44) but was reclaimed by David after the death of Saul and her brothers (2 Sam 3:13-16). When David brought the ark of the covenant back to Jerusalem and entered the city with a war victory dance, Michal despised him, regarding his behavior as shameful and vulgar. David's response suggests that it was the service of the Lord that Michal had despised and dishonored (2 Sam 6:21-22). Consequently, she was childless (v. 23).

Michal is named as the mother of five of Saul's grandsons, whom she brought up for Adriel and his wife, Merab (2 Sam 21:8; 1 Sam 18:19). Her siblings were Merab, Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua (1 Sam 14:49).Top of FormBottom of Form
